A new mattress is an important purchase that deserves plenty of thought beforehand. A mattress is a long-term commitment much like any major appliance in your home. A quality mattress can range in price depending on your needs, but the payoff for quality sleep is always worth it. Your mattress plays a vital role in your life, not just during the nighttime hours when you’re asleep, but also while you’re awake during the day. Support, comfort, and durability are the recipe for a good night’s sleep, which in turn promotes a healthier mood, allows you to function better throughout the day, and helps to prevent the many chronic health ailments associated with lack of sleep.

It’s recommended that you replace your mattress every 7–10 years, so whether your bed’s support has deteriorated or you’re just itching for an upgrade, it helps to be armed with knowledge before making your next purchase. To help you make a confident decision, we have a “Dos” and “Don’ts” guide to buying a new mattress.

So, if you’re in the market for a new mattress, it helps to be armed with knowledge before heading off to the local mattress store or clicking the “Buy now” button online.

DON’T assume every brand has the bed for you

There’s the expression “you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince.” While it’s mostly applied to romance, we say the same is true for mattress shopping (because love and sleep are one and the same, right?). This is all to say, we implore you to not rush this all-too-important decision and to take the time to scope out several brands as options. And if you need help finding which sleep support material, foundation, or mattress type best suits your needs, our expert staff is happy to answer any questions you have and assist you in your mattress shopping exploration.

We understand the world is changing quite a bit, and if testing out a mattress in the store isn’t your preferred mode of shopping, we have our entire catalog of mattresses online for safe and secure shopping. You can conveniently browse our collection from the comfort of your own home and try out our virtual testing system to find your exact mattress fit.

And don’t rule out buying a bed in a box! We have a selection of mattresses in a box that are ready to ship. It’s like they say—comfort can come in big packages!

DON’T just buy the first one you try in the store

Finding the ideal mattress is more than just hopping on a display bed with the imperfect Goldilocks metric of “just right.” Since an investment in a new bed is ultimately an investment in your wellbeing, any margin of doubt is something you simply cannot afford.  Explore several options in the same size, mattress type, and firmness to get a broader understanding of what you want and need—as well as your bed partner, if applicable.

DO educate yourself about mattress features

Before you walk into any store, we suggest doing some research of your own so that you can give the sales associate an idea of what you’re looking for. Do you know what a hybrid bed is? What about the difference between an innerspring and memory foam bed? Pillow-top: yes or no? Your preferred mattress type might depend on what type of sleeper you are. Side, stomach, and back sleepers all snooze at different positions, so the materials, foundations, and comfort levels might affect your quality of sleep.

If you’re a side sleeper, memory foam is the way to go. The foam compresses around your hips, arms, and shoulders to keep you comfortably in place. Memory foam mattresses are softer than spring mattresses and the foam absorbs the impact of tossing and turning that most side sleepers usually experience.

If you snuggle in for a restful night’s sleep on your back, then a hybrid mattress is most likely what you’re looking for. Back sleepers enjoy the right amount of firm support and cushiony comfort to align their spine and keep their shoulders and back comfortable.

If you fall asleep flat on your tummy each night, you’ll probably be torn between memory foam or hybrid. The reason being, stomach sleepers typically feel added strain on their necks and shoulders from turning their head from one side to another throughout the night. They want something that prevents too much sinking and evenly distributes weight to help prevent some of the aches and pains associated with stomach sleeping.
