What Lies Beneath the Sheets?

by Garner Appliance & Mattress

Mattress comfort is so important for a good night’s sleep, but did you know your mattress should be good for your health as well? A recent 2021 article from WebMD outlines possible health risks from worn-out mattresses.

We wash sheets, pillowcases, and mattress pads and put them right back on the bed without inspecting our mattresses. Sometimes we just want to hide under the covers and not think about problems with our mattresses, but it’s so important to bring them into the 21st century for a clean, fresh, and healthy sleep.

Why are we at risk?

We certainly like to think that our mattresses can last a long time without replacing them, but over time the wear and tear can have an effect on you and your body.

As outlined by the online health company, WebMD, you wouldn’t drive your car for 30,000 miles without an oil change. When it comes to your mattress, you’ve probably logged 30,000 hours of sleep on it after 10 years.

A decade of sweat, saliva, and dead skin on top of your box springs is a recipe for health hazards. It also may bring some unwanted bedroom guests!

What’s visiting your mattress?

Most of us are extra careful when checking into vacation spots, whether it’s a hotel or condo, we want to be sure no mattress creatures are lying in wait. But at home, we take for granted that everything is okay. Take it from health experts — there are uninvited guests just waiting to make an appearance:

  • Dust Mites:
In one year, you’ll shed close to 12 million skin cells. Often the dead skin lands in the crevices of your mattress. These tiny creatures and their droppings can set off allergies or asthma. An Ohio State University study estimates that 100,000 to 10 million mites may be making themselves at home in your mattress.
  • Bed Bugs:
These pesky bugs can cause havoc on you while you’re sleeping. They are happy to hide in your mattress seams, sheets, and bedroom furniture. They are good travelers who like to hitch a ride home in luggage.
  • Fungus and Bacteria:
Did you know that the average adult sweats 26 gallons a year in bed? That makes for a warm, moist place for fungus and bacteria to grow.
  • Pet Dander:
We love our furry friends sharing the bed with us, but it might lead to specks of skin called dander. Dust mites love to munch on it.

When is it time to replace your mattress?

Once you decide to take a closer look beneath the sheets, it might surprise you. If you are seeing coils that pop thru, feel like you are falling over Niagara Falls from sagging edges, it might be time. Those deep divots you see are from years of nightly tossing and turning. If you’re waking up with aches and pains after a poor night’s sleep, it might be time.
