When is the Perfect Time to Buy a New Mattress?

by Waverly Wilde

We spend a lot of time on our mattresses. When we go to bed every night, it’s there to comfort and lull us to sleep. When we’re not feeling well, it’s there to ease our pain and help us relax. When we’re exhausted, it’s there restore our physical and mental health. We spend nearly one-third of our life on our mattress, so if it’s not doing good things for your sleep or body, it’s time to find a new one.

If you’re waking up with more aches and pains than you went to bed with or having trouble falling asleep every night, check your mattress for the early warning signs below that show it’s time to get a new one.

It’s Reached Double Digits

The lifespan of a mattress is typically 10 years – usually anything older will cause back pain, inadequate sleep, and even increase stress. But the actual lifespan of your mattress depends on a couple of things: Who you sleep with, alone or with a partner, and how often you do a little upkeep to your bed. Taking care of your mattress by cleaning it every couple of months, using a mattress protector, and not spilling food and drinks could help keep your bed around a little longer than the average one. But, if your mattress is at least 10 years old, it’s time to let your sweet old mattress retire.

Sagging

What is sagging? It’s when your mattress starts to slump off the sides of your bed foundation because it’s softening, breaking down, and wearing out.

This usually happens more with older spring beds, but nearly any mattress material can start to sink in the middle and sag off the sides over time. If your mattress is sagging, you’re probably getting headaches and pains in your back more often than usual. Unfortunately, once it starts, it will only get worse – so it’s best to find a new mattress as soon as possible.

Allergies & Asthma

We are approaching allergy season, and if you find your allergies and asthma are acting up more than usual, or are acting up in the off-season, the culprit is probably your bed. A mattress is a scary place when it’s not washed – it becomes a hub for dust mites! These minuscule mites won’t bite you, but they’ll make your allergies the worst they’ve ever been. So, if asthma attacks or itchy eyes are common occurrences try vacuuming or following these steps to get a clean mattress. If nothing seems to work, it’s probably time to jump on the new mattress train.

Affects Your Weight

Have you noticed a few extra pounds since you started not sleeping well? Not getting the sleep you need isn’t just bad for your mental health, it hurts your physical health too. According to this sleep study, the fewer hours of sleep you get, the higher the possibility of more food consumption. That’s because sleep deprivation disrupts the production of hormones like leptin, which suppresses hunger. So, less sleep, larger appetite.

Feeling Uncomfortable

This is obvious: If you feel uncomfortable when you are laying on your bed, then it’s not the right mattress for your body. Your mattress should conform to your shape and give you the right support everywhere to help you fall into a deep sleep.

Your body and mental health are important, and your mattress plays a large part in that. If you aren’t getting the right comfort then it’s time to treat yourself to sleep you deserve. Stop by Duerden’s where we’ll help you find the perfect fit so that you’re snoozing peacefully every night.
